I LOVE BIG ART!
Small art is great, too, but the first art to get dropped of for the CSAlove show arrived today and much of it is GIGANTIC and all of it is FANTASTIC! I can’t wait to see it on our walls… Check out Natalie Northrup’s and Brian Severn’s work at their sites (click on their names). They are studio-mates in the California Building over in Northeast.
Natalie’s body of work includes a few self-portraits-as-a-donut! That’s pretty amazing in itself, but today I asked her what initiated the donut self portraits. She said they were inspired by FOOD in MINNESOTA! Arriving in MN from graduate school in New Jersey, she noticed how much great local food there was everywhere in Minneapolis. What she mostly remembered about New Jersey and food (no offense New Jerseyians, really) was the Dunkin’ Donuts on every corner. So coming to Minnesota made her think about her relationship to food, which led her to paint donut self portraits. I’m so glad I asked! The rest of the art will arrive in the next days, and will be hung on our walls with care this weekend. With extra care, actually, as Angela, one of CSAloves operators (from New Jersey, incidentally) fractured her elbow this week while rollerskating! But we’ll get the art up, don’t you worry.
